BRADY– Decided to change last year’s history and start strong a new campaign, the Ballinger Bearcats made a statement last Friday night, August 31, 2012 at their season opener in Brady. The Bearcats had a round night by defeating the Bulldogs 43-7.

Running back Zach Perez, who spent most of the last season walking the side lines with a broken foot, ran for two touchdowns and returned a kickoff 89 yards for a third score.

The win helps to start leaving behind the 1-9 season the Bearcats had in 2011. Friday night the Bearcats saw their luck change starting with the coin toss. Ballinger won the toss and chose to defer until the second half.

The decision would probe to be the right one as Riley Woodruff forced a fumble in the first play of the game. The ball was recovered by Jacob Rodriquez and Ballinger finished the drive with a 24-yard field goal by Dusting King with 5:18 left on the first.

Brady couldn’t figure out how to stop the Bearcats in the first half. In the second quarter the Bearcats secured the game with three touchdowns. First Anthony Rodriquez captured a 25-yard pass into the endzone by Jacob Rodriquez. King made the kick good for the 10-0 with 11:52 in the second quarter.

The second touchdown would come from the cleats of Perez after the Bearcats defense forced the Bulldogs to punt. Starting at their own 35-yard line the Bearcats played a nine play drive toped by an 18-yard run by Perez. King kicked the ball between the poles for the 17-0 with 5:47 in the half.

The third touchdown also came after a key play by Ballinger’s defense. Zach Perez intercepted a pass to set Ballinger at Brady’s 41. Carries by Cory Johnson, Perez and Clayton Worthington set the ball at the 6-yard line. From there Perez carried the ball into paydirt for his second touchdown of the night. King kicked the extra point, 24-0 with 1:12 remaining on the half.

After the pause it was the Bearcats turn to receive the kickoff. Perez received the ball at the 11-yard line and rushed all the field into the endzone. King kicked the extra point, 31-0 with 11:44 remaining in the quarter.

The ensuing drive Brady was getting close. The Bulldogs had just passed the middle when Devon Holescher recovered a fumble giving the Bearcats another great opportunity to score.

Zach Perez ran 21 yards and left the ball at Brady’s 20, and from there Cory Johnson finished the job with 8:36 on the clock. The kick was failed and the score was 37-0.

It was until the fourth quarter when the Bulldogs put some points on their side. Aaron Eagle made a 2-yard run and Jerry Trejo kicked the extra point with 11:56 left in the game, 37-7.

However the Bearcats still had more to give. With 5:41 remaining Tanner Clifton ran 41 yards into promised land to square the score with the kick blocked 43-7.

Perez finished with 100 yards rushing on 16 carries. 

Ballinger’s defense limited Brady to 178 total yards.

Cory Johnson led the way running for the Bearcats with 10 carries and 102 yards, Perez had 16-100, Clifton 2-41, Jacob Rodriguez 3-6, Willie Collins 2-0.

Passing Jacob Rodriquez completed 6 of 7 attempts for a total of 42 yards. Clayton Wothington received 3-34, Rodriguez 1-25, Ely Self 1-6.
