SEGUIN — Following a 3-1 season-opening trip to Chicago this past weekend, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets were unable to maintain that momentum in their American Southwest Conference volleyball opener Wednesday night.

    The Lady Jackets dropped a 25-12, 25-15, 20-25, 24-26, 15-11 decision at Texas Lutheran to slip to 3-2 overall and 0-1 in ASC West Division action.

    Sarah Bishop paced the HPU offense with 14 kills trailed by 10 from Taylor Jordan, five from Hannah Hicks, three from Sarah Davies, two each from Carlee Ammons, Jessica Guerra and Harli Benham and one apiece by Shelby Bridges and Allyson Reed.

    Reed dished out 22 assists while Guerra contributed 14. Bishop, Jordan and Bridges also recorded service aces.

    Defensively, Bridges collected a team-high 22 digs followed by 18 from Jordan and eight from Bishop.

    Hicks led the way with six blocks trailed by four from Benham, three from Davies, two apiece from Jordan and Ammons and one by Bishop.

    For Texas Lutheran (2-3, 1-0), Sofia Klepper led the Lady Bulldogs with 14 kills followed by 11 each from Haley Lasseter and Marcia Sagebiel, along with 10 from Victoria Podrebarac.

    Manda Martin distributed 47 assists while Sagebiel served two aces.

    On defense, Megan Lee finished with 21 digs trailed by Megan Dugie with 12 and Savannah Erskine with 10. Sagebiel also chipped in a team-high four blocks.

    The Lady Jackets will be back in action Friday and Saturday at the Austin College tournament. Howard Payne will face the University of St. Thomas (Houston) at 3 p.m. and Austin College at 5 p.m. Friday, followed by Saturday matches against Rhodes College at 11 a.m. and Southwestern at 5 p.m.
