CROSS PLAINS ? Carl Lee Smith, age 78, of Cross Plains, passed away Thursday, Sept. 6, in the VA Hospital in Temple. Funeral services will be at 10 a.m. Monday, Sept. 10, at the First Baptist Church of Cross Plains, with Pastor Ronnie B. White officiating. Burial will follow in the Atwell Cemetery in Callahan County, Texas. The family will be at Higginbotham Funeral Home for a time of sharing memories and visitation from 4-6 p.m. Sunday Sept. 9, 2012.
Carl was born June 8, 1934, in McCamey, Texas, to Clinton Ernest and Eunice (Ware) Smith. He graduated from the Rising Star High School and joined the United States Coast Guard in 1953. He served until 1957. He was married to Ileen Foster Sept. 28, 1954, in Rising Star. They have been residents of Cross Plains since 1999. He was a member of the First Baptist Church where he attended the Sowers’ Sunday School Class. He served in the Coast Guard during the Korean War, and he was a member of the American Legion. He once served as president of the Home Builders Association of Brownwood. He was also a master plumber.
Survivors include his wife Ileen Smith of the home; sons, Rodney Smith and Rose of Abilene, and Ricky Smith of Cross Plains; grandchildren, Ricky Lee Smith and wife Stacy of Anna, Arron and Hanna Smith of Abilene, Holly Smith of Cross Plains, and Matt Smith of Abilene; great-grandchildren, Chase and Arista Smith, both of Anna, Texas, and Brooklyn Smith of Abilene.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Randell and Reggie; and two sisters, Frances Reeves and Wanda Bible.
