Both the Howard Payne Lady Jackets and Yellow Jackets split their first two American Southwest Conference soccer matches of the season over the weekend, falling to UT-Dallas Friday while rebounding with victories over Ozarks Saturday at Citizens National Bank Field.

For the Lady Jackets, Saturday’s 3-0 victory over Ozarks marked not only the first of conference play, but the first of the season as well.

Howard Payne (1-3, 1-1) received a pair of goals from Leslie Jones — one 8:42 into the contest and the other with 15:52 remaining — while Katy Nix chipped in the other goal 9:32 into the second half.

Kerrie Ford, Shannon Costello and Holly Gardner were credited with assists on the goals, in that order.

Ozarks attempted just one shot the entire match compared to 26 by Howard Payne, with 12 on goal. Adrienne Walker and Andrea Barvientos combined for the shutout in goal.

The Yellow Jackets improved to 3-2-1 overall and 1-1 in ASC action with their 3-2 win over Ozarks Saturday.

Howard Payne trailed 1-0 seven minutes into the match as Ozarks’ Marcus Aldaba scored unassisted to put the Eagles on top, but the Yellow Jackets responded with three consecutive goals — including two by Eric Young.

Kevin Ruiz first scored on an assist from Edgar Villa to pull HPU even at 1 with 9:47 left in the first half.

Young then took an assist from Villa and gave the Yellow Jackets the lead, 2-1, 10:59 into the second half. Young’s second goal, which was unassisted, occurred with 16:52 remaining.

Ozarks closed to within 3-2 with 8:56 left on a goal by Shaun Keane, but the Yellow Jackets held on down the stretch.

In the Lady Jackets’ loss to UT-Dallas, Nix scored HPU’s lone goal on an assist from Haley Clanahan 10:27 in the match, which evened the score. UT-Dallas grabbed a 1-0 lead at the 8:41 mark when Eboni Udenze scored on the back end of an assist from Kelli Wentworth.

UT-Dallas recorded the go-ahead goal with 3:53 left in the first half as Taylor Belcher scored off an assist from Taylor Maeker. The Lady Comets then tacked on an insurance goal 11:44 into the second half as Udenze found the net again with an assist from Maeker.    Howard Payne finished with five shot attempts, including three on goal, while UT-Dallas attempted 14 shots, with 10 on goal. Walker recorded six saves for the Lady Jackets, while Lady Comets Macaire Ament and Brittany Best combined for two saves.
