Brownwood High School quarterbacks coach Sam Harrell, who led Ennis High School teams to three state championships before retiring to battle muscular sclerosis, will be the speaker for this year’s Brown County United Way kickoff luncheon.
The event will be held at noon Tuesday, Oct 2, at the Mabee University Center at Howard Payne. Tickets for the buffet lunch are on sale for $20 through the United Way office. Call (325) 643-5084 for reservations.
Tables for eight will be available for $160.
Luncheon proceeds will be among the first donations to the 2013 campaign. A goal of $250,000 has been set for next year, and contributions will be divided among 15 local members agencies.
Harrell, the son of a coach, graduated from Brownwood High School in 1975. He played quarterback for the Lions under the late Coach Gordon Wood before starting his career coaching.
In 2005, Harrell was diagnosed with multiple sclerosis, and in 2010, because of the disease and his worsening health condition, he retired. But as he recovered, he found he was able to return to coaching on a part-time basis.
