ABILENE — The Brownwood Freshman Lions improved to 2-1 on the season with a 16-12 road victory over Abilene Wylie Thursday night.
Behind the offensive line play of Kory Owen, Carlito Gonzales, Graham Sharpe, Christian Peters, Mario Saldana, Hayden Day and Tristan Chesser, the Lions rushed for 224 yards and passed for an additional 104 yards.
Carson Cloy chalked up 92 yards and a touchdown on the ground followed by 76 yards from Brandon Diaz, 51 yards and a touchdown from Grant Lewis and a 5-yard carry by Garrett Doyal.
Lewis also completed 6 of 12 passes for 91 yards, while Colt Garrett went 3 of 3 for 13 yards.
Rylee Gregory caught four passes for 38 yards, Bruce Sterling grabbed two receptions for 36 yards and Blake Steele (17 yards), Jon Kirbo (10 yards) and Cory Richardson (3 yards) also made receptions.
Steele also converted both his extra-point attempts.
Defensively, Sterling returned an interception on a two-point conversion, which resulted in the final four-point margin. Garrett and Skyler Andrews also picked off passes. Other standouts included linebacker James Nash and Peters on the defensive line.
The Freshman Lions will travel to Sweetwater next week.
Abilene Wylie 36, JV Lions 28
ABILENE — The Brownwood JV Lions were dealt their first setback of the season Thursday night with a 36-28 loss at Abilene Wylie.
Colt Bertrand threw four touchdown passes for Brownwood — two to Matthew Gomez and one each to Cody Richardson and Ceth Hardy.
Austin Chick chipped in a two-point conversion, while Roger Soto also put forth a solid special teams performance.
Defensive standouts included John Mobley, Connor Vara and James McCullough.
The JV Lions (2-1) will venture to Sweetwater next Thursday.
