BURLESON — In a match split down the middle, the mixed doubles contest was the deciding factor as the Brownwood High tennis team fell to Burkburnett, 10-9, Saturday.
Brownwood won all nine boys matches, but lost all nine girls matches and the mixed doubles battle.
Collecting singles wins for the Lions were Brian Bowen (6-1, 6-3 over Jacob Organ), Mark Johnson (6-0, 6-1 over Mason Winkles), Noah Marlin (6-0, 6-1 over Isaac Bell), Joaquin Alonzo (6-1, 6-0 over Esteban Rios), Bennie Salazar (6-1, 6-0 over Kade Mullens) and Aaron Pulley (6-0, 6-0 over Aaron Canham).
In doubles action, team wins belonged to Bowen and Johnson (8-0 over Winkles and Rios), Alonzo and Salazar (8-1 over Mullens and Ball) and Matthew Bryant and Nathan Ross (8-0 over White and Aguilar).
For the Lady Lions, competing in singles play were Emily Harding (6-0, 6-1 loss to Lauren Moon), Delaney Bennett (6-2, 6-0 loss to Hannah Galbraith), Stephanie Thompson (6-2, 6-0 loss to Kasay Coker), Lindsey Williams (7-6, 6-0 loss to Kara Miller), Rosie Cadena (6-2, 6-2 loss to Kendyl Berry) and Bailey Bishop (6-2, 6-1 loss to Alydia Ball).
Doubles teams for the girls included Harding and Bennett (8-2 defeat vs. Galbraith and Miller), Thompson and Mabrey Sharpe (8-2 loss to Moon and Coker) and Williams and Brittney Blake (8-5 loss to Berry and Sykes).
In the decisive mixed doubles match, Cadena and Zak Blake fell by an 8-5 count.
Brownwood (4-4) will return to action at 8:30 a.m. Saturday when it hosts Lampasas.
