Jurors in 35th District Court have convicted Robert Thornburgh Jr., 45, on both counts of sexual assault of a child.

The verdict was rendered Thursday afternoon, and the punishment phase is under way. Punishment will be set by Judge Steve Ellis.

The charges stem from allegations that Thornburgh had sexual relations in 2006 with his then-14-year-old girlfriend. Thornburgh maintained that he had tried to help the girl, who had a troubled home life, but that he did not have a dating or sexual relationship with her.
