ROUND ROCK — Only half of Zephyr’s state-qualifying cross country team competed at the UIL Class A state meet a year ago, yet the Lady Bulldogs were able to duplicate their seventh place finish of 2011.
Zephyr, which placed third at the Region II-A meet, generated 152 points at Old Settler’s Park Saturday which trailed only state champion Hamlin (66 points), runner-up Harper (69), Gruver (76), San Saba (94), Stratford (119) and Sunray (140).
“I’m excited for them to be able to finish seventh,” said Zephyr cross country coach DeAnn Perkins. “The competition was actually a little bit tougher this year, but that’s what you expect at state.”
Leading the charge for the Lady Bulldogs was Haven Rogers, who came in 20th after being clocked at 13:17.46, followed by Aubrey Burkett (24th, 13:21.62), Darian Smith (29th, 13:35.84), Chasity Williams (37th, 13:57.54), Codi Perkins (42nd, 14:04.49) and Karina Rincon (55th, 14:26.29).
“I was surprised we finished seventh since we were the third-place team out of the region, but Aubrey, Haven and Codi ran their best times of the year today,” Perkins said.
Burkett is the lone senior on the roster, so with the bulk of the team returning and back-to-back state appearances to their credit, the Lady Bulldogs are already beginning to target a higher goal for 2013.
“We’d like to come back and our goal is to get on the medal stand sooner or later,” Perkins said. “We’re going to miss our senior, we can’t replace her, but these girls are going to do their best to take up what she’s leaving behind.”
Two runners from San Saba, which won the Region II-A meet, medaled in Round Rock as Shea Scott finished fourth (12:34.46) and Liberty Lasley was ninth (12:56.77). Also competing for the Lady Dillos were Alexa Maxcey (22nd, 13:20.11), Katherine Ingram (26th, 13:25.66), Alexus Saldivar (33rd, 13:45.15), Yicelle Cuevas (39th, 14:00.68) and Amaranta Gamboa (46th, 14:08.64).
