EARLY — The Comanche Indians were crowned the 5th and 6th grade champions during one of the two Texas Youth Football League Super Bowl games Saturday at Longhorn Stadium.
Braden Jetton scored the sole touchdown for the Brownwood Maroon Lions in the 40-8 loss. Zach Smith kicked the extra points.
Jetton rushed for more than 100 yards against the Indians, who for much of the game had a difficult time containing the rushing attack of the Lions.
In the other Super Bowl game of the day, the Bangs Dragons squared off against the Mason Punchers in the 3rd and 4th grade championship contest, and fell in overtime by a 6-4 count.
After a scoreless four quarters, the game headed to overtime where the Dragons scored first with a field goal by Ethan Sanchez. Field goals are awarded four points in TYFL, while kicks after touchdowns are worth two points.
The game ended on the next Mason possession when the Punchers’ Matthew Kerr rushed in from 10 yards out to secure the championship for Mason.
Bangs head coach Dennis Sanchez said he was proud of his team.
“The kids believed they could do it,” Sanchez said. “The fought from start to finish and gave me everything they had.”
