Howard Payne University’s Concert Choir will present “We the People: Words and Music of Revolutionary America,” at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in the university’s Grace Chapel.
The patriotic concert will include songs with texts by Thomas Jefferson, Benjamin Franklin and Phillis Wheatley as well as pieces by William Billings, who is considered the “Father of American Choral Music.”
In addition, the choir’s premiere performance piece was composed by HPU’s Dr. Elisabeth Greene, adjunct instructor of music. The composition is based on a letter from Abigail Adams to her husband, former U.S. President John Adams.
“These students have been working hard to bring the HPU community a fantastic collection of music based on the writings of the American Revolution,” said Dr. Monte Garrett, associate professor of music and director of choral activities.
