WINTERSĖ The Winters Independent School District hosted Monday, November 12, 2012 the Veteranís Day Program at the Special Events Center, in order to recognize veterans for their service and pay tribute to fallen warriors.

The ceremony started early, with the traditional pancake breakfast cooked and served by the Winters ISD Board of Trustees to area veterans.

Attending veterans were escorted by the Winters Cub Scout Pack 249, which also sang Stars and Stripes Forever.

The program at the Gymnasium included the color guard by the Marine Corps, and patriotic songs led by the Winters Elementary Select Choir, under the direction of Fran Kidwell, and by the Winters High School band, under the direction of Phil and Karen Mooney.

Master of ceremonies Winters ISD Superintendent Don Kuempel, Jr. presented the First Annual Patriotic Award. The award was presented to long time Patriotic Pen contest sponsor and VFW Post 9193 Ladies Auxiliary member Mary Kurtz.

The plaque was presented to Mrs. Kurtzís husband, R.C. Kurtz, since she was unable to attend due to health issues.

Band members wore shirts honoring every branch of the armed forces, and after singing the Battle Hymn, God Bless America, and Taps, everyone left in silence, remembering and honoring the Americaís heroes.
