The ACU Speech and Debate team continues to succeed, despite facing a year of rebuilding and assimilating new members to the team. This fall, the Speech and Debate team has traveled to the University of Houston and the United States Air Force Academy (USAFA), competing against schools from across the nation and returning with tournament trophies.

Dylan Brugman, junior political science major and Joyce Schuster, freshman interdisciplinary major with a focus in social justice, won every round and every judge’s ballot at the University of Houston tournament. At USAFA, Brugman and Schuster competed in the semi-final round, defeating 37 other teams from around the country.

Dena Counts, instructor of communication and ACU's forensics coach, says, “These students have dedicated their time and skills to learning debate and becoming a true team. I have been so impressed by their dedication to excellence as well as their dedication to pushing each other toward excellence.”

New additions to the team, Beth Maisano, junior graphic design major and BaiLee Evans of Early, freshman biology major, both made it to quarterfinals at the University of Houston and octofinals at USAFA. This is their first year of debate at the collegiate level.

JC Peeples, freshman journalism major and Andrew Richards, junior communication major, competed in the Novice division at USAFA and broke to quarterfinals. This is also their first year of debate. Toni Maisano, junior communication major, won fourth place in Extemporaneous Speaking, and Schuster won fourth place in Novice Impromptu Speaking.
