The momentum the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets gained with their first victory at East Texas Baptist this past Tuesday did not translate into continued success in Saturdayís American Southwest Conference opener.
The Yellow Jackets fell victim to a 53-percent shooting barrage from the UT-Tyler Patriots, who strolled past Howard Payne, 79-60, Saturday afternoon at the Brownwood Coliseum in the ASC opener for both teams,
Howard Payne (1-2, 0-1) converted just 34 percent (24 of 70) of its field goal attempts while UT-Tyler (2-0, 1-0) connected on 32 of 60, including 11 of 21 (52 percent) from beyond the three-point arc. The Yellow Jackets turned the ball over just time nine times, but were outrebounded by the Patriots 44-40, despite pulling down 15 boards on the offensive end.
JaKalan Gayden finished with a team-high 14 points for Howard Payne trailed by 13 from Brandon Gould, eight from Michael Thompson, six from Travis Taillet, five each from Christian Davis and Donovan Ford, three from Blake Arbogast and two points apiece by Ross Whittet, Quelan Lancaster and Nigele Robertson.
For UT-Tyler, Jordan Cannon led the attack with 19 points and nine rebounds trailed by 12 points from Darren Houliston. Billy Hopson and Travis Dykman chipped in nine points apiece while Joe Stephens finished with eight.
The Yellow Jackets and Patriots were even at 13-all with 12:19 left in the first half before the game quickly got away from Howard Payne. UT-Tyler fired off 22 of the next 24 points to open a 20-point advantage, 35-15, with 6:05 left before halftime.
UT-Tylerís run began innocently with a layup from Stephen Tarpley, while an Equettis Jenkins three-pointer pushed the advantage to 18-13. Following a free throw from Stephens, back-to-back treys by Dykman and Stephens suddenly put Howard Payne in a 27-13 hole with 7:32 left before halftime.
Dykman later scored on a layup before Howard Payne stopped the bleeding with a jumper by Gould, which made the score 27-15 and served as the only points for the Yellow Jackets during a 7:12 stretch.
†† †Another layup by Dykman, followed by consecutive treys from Cannon, capped the 22-2 UT-Tyler run.
†† †The Yellow Jackets slipped further behind as the half progressed with UT-Tylerís lead peaking at 28 points, 50-22, before a three-pointer from Arbogast with five seconds left sent HPU to the locker room down 50-25 at the break.
†† †The onslaught continued in the second half with UT-Tylerís lead twice reaching 39 points ó 73-34 and 75-36 with just over eight minutes remaining.
†† †The Yellow Jackets were able to shave 20 points off UT-Tylerís largest lead to make the final score more respectable, but Howard Payne never threatened after the midway point of the first half.
†† †Howard Payne will attempt to rebound and gain its first conference victory when it hosts Mississippi College (2-0) at 7:30 p.m. Thursday. The Yellow Jackets will also welcome Louisiana College (0-2) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
