An accident on a south Brownwood residential street Saturday night involving suspected drunken driving, and a structure fire about an hour later in a nearby neighborhood, brought quick responses from police and firefighters.
Around 7:30 p.m., a car traveling on First Street struck an SUV that was parked along the curb outside a residence near the intersection with Slayden, knocking the SUV into another parked car.
Witnesses said the car that hit the SUV was traveling at high speed and spun around 180 degrees in the street after the collision.
Police spoke with the car's driver, a woman whose identity was not immediately available, for several minutes. The woman spoke loudly and made comments about calling her lawyer, and police appeared to be handcuffing the woman. Police placed the woman in the back seat of a patrol car, and, police said, the woman was being arrested on a DWI charge.
Around 8:30 p.m., firefighters were notified of a structure fire in the 3500 block of Fourth, near the intersection with Broadmoor. Firefighters radioed minutes later that the fire was knocked down and had been contained to the back porch.
Firefighters remained on the scene, walking in and out of the house and in and out of the back yard.
Other details were not immediately available.
