BALLINGERĖ Did you know that in Boston, Massachusetts in 1999 FHA members voted to change their name to FCCLA? FCCLA stands for Family, Career, and Community Leaders of America. It is the only student-led high school organization with the central focus on the family.†
FCCLA members are high school students who have taken a Family and Consumer Science course and pay their dues. FCCLA members participate in projects that impact their school, community, state, and their world.†
They work toward career-preparation through community service and service learning projects. These projects prepare members for college and the workforce.†
Ballinger FCCLA has broken the chapterís membership record again this year with 70 members affiliated. Every year, chapter memberís participate in a service learning project to collect canned goods for the local Food Pantry.†
Some other examples of projects that BHS FCCLA members have helped with are: selling frozen casseroles to raise money for Imagination Station, teaching students at the Elementary School about nutrition and physical activity, implementing a district-wide anti-bullying curriculum at BISD, raising money for local cancer patients, and strengthening family ties through a Father/Daughter and Mother/Son Dance.†
Along with community service and service learning opportunities, FCCLA gives members the opportunity to compete in STAR events or competitive events. These events teach students about professional communication and presentations as well as giving students the opportunity to meet students from around the Region and State.
