WICHITA FALLS — The Brownwood High tennis team opened play in the Texas Tennis Coaches Association Region 2 Tournament with a 10-7 victory over Iowa Park, which keeps the Lions and Lady Lions alive in the hunt for a state berth despite a loss to top-seed Vernon later Friday.
The Lions will face Burkburnett at 9 a.m. for third place and a chance at a playback match for second place. The top two seeds advance to the state tournament in Abilene next weekend.
In the win over Iowa Park, Brownwood won four of the seven doubles matches.
Collecting doubles wins were the boys teams of Brian Bowen and Mark Johnson (8-2 over Sean Jackson and Curtis Martin) and Noah Marlin and Matthew Bryant (8-3 over Colby Alston and Swanner).
Girls doubles teams tallying victories were Emily Harding and Delaney Bennett (8-6 over Jadey Richie and Chynna Rhodes) and Lindsey Williams and Karina Garcia (8-2 over Kadey Jackson and Hams).
The Lions and Lady Lions also chipped in three singles victories respectively.
Landing in the win column for the boys were Johnson (6-0, 6-0 over Martin), Joaquin Alonzo (5-7, 6-2, 10-4 over Ace Oates) and Benny Salazar (6-2, 3-6, 11-9 over Carter Case).
Chalking up wins for the girls were Harding (1-6, 7-5, 11-9 over Richie), Bennett (4-6, 6-3, 10-5 over Rhodes) and Williams (6-2, 6-2 over Mable Jordan).
In the match against Vernon, the Lions and Lady Lions came out on the short end of a 16-3 decision.
Earning victories for Brownwood were the boys doubles team of Bowen and Johnson (8-2 over Max Herber and Satwik Ale), as well as Bowen (7-5, 6-1 over Herber) and Johnson (6-0, 6-4 over Clay Fisher) in singles play.
