FARMERS BRANCH — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets put 11 runs on the board against the No. 4 team in the nation, but gave up 17 in a six-run loss to UT-Tyler to begin Saturday’s second day of the ASC First Pitch tournament.
The Lady Jackets surrendered four runs in the top of the first inning, but answered with four in the bottom of the frame and three in the second to build a 7-4 lead.
UT-Tyler (7-0) closed to within 7-6 in the top of the fourth, but HPU countered with two runs in the bottom of the inning to regain a three-run edge, 9-6.
In the top of the fifth, UT-Tyler pushed six runs across the plate to grabbed a 12-9 advantage. The Lady Patriots added four more in the sixth before the Lady Jackets closed to within 16-11 in the bottom of the inning. UT-Tyler added one more insurance run in the seventh.
Offensively for Howard Payne, Evangelina Tellez finished with three hits, scored three runs and drove in a run. Katie Poerner added two hits, including a double, and scored twice, while Jessica Morales contributed a pair of hits, including a triple, and a team-high three RBIs. Tylene Middleton homered an drove in two runs, Shandi Winstead added one hit and one RBI and Pricilla Patino finished with one hit and a pair of RBIs. Amanda Cruddas also knocked in two runs.
Baillie Trumble pitched 6.2 innings for HPU and allowed nine reined runs on nine hits with seven walks and two strikeouts. Keeley Lowrance worked one-third of an inning and surrendered six runs on two hits with four walks.
Ashley Endsley humored and drove in six RBIs for UT-Tyler, while Brittney Batten added two hits and four RBIs and Heather Abshire finished with a pair of hits and knocked in three. Kelsie Batten was the winning pitcher despair allowing five runs on five hits in four innings.
HPU concluded the weekend with a 4-0 loss to No. 22 Louisiana College as the Lady Jackets mustered just one base hit.
Middleton singled with one out in the bottom of the third inning against Eastham, who struck out 10 and walked five. Winstead, Morales, Patino Gober and Carissa Zarate drew free passes for HPU.
Lowrance went the distance in the circle for Howard Payne, allowed three earned runs on eight hit with one walk and a pair of strikeouts. Louisiana College scored single runs in the second and fifth innings and two runs in the third.
The Lady Jackets will attempt to snap a four-game win streak as it heads to Arizona for the Tucson Invitational Thursday through Saturday.
