EARLY — A press release was issued by the Early ISD Wednesday stating the board of trustees will conduct a special meeting at 5:30 p.m. Friday where it is expected a new head football coach and athletic director will be hired and revealed to the public.

When contacted Wednesday, Early superintendent Brett Koch would not offer the name of the lone finalist, but did state he was an “experienced coach.”

“This is a board decision, not a superintendent’s decision, so I will let this person visit with the board,” Koch said in regard to keeping the finalist’s identity anonymous. “The board is who will hire the coach, so until the board has an opportunity to meet him and they come out of the closed session with a hire, I don’t feel it’s my place. I feel that’s the appropriate way to handle this.”

Koch did state more than 150 applicants submitted resumés to replace former Early athletic director and head football coach Brad Bowden, who was reassigned on Jan. 7 after posting an 8-22 record with no playoff appearances in three seasons.

“We had a lot of work to do,” Koch said.

Koch added that he expected the finalist for head football coach and athletic director to arrive by midday Friday and to begin his new role at Early High School on March 18.
