GEORGETOWN — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets pushed two runs across the plate in the top of the 10th inning, snapped a three-game skid with a 7-5 non-conference victory at Southwestern Tuesday night.
In the top of 10th, Carlton Brown reached on an error to start the frame for HPU (13-10). With one out, Brown stole second base ahead of a Dillon McDugle walk. Both runners advanced a base on a wild pitch and Conner Roberts came through with the game-winning two-RBI single to center field.
Brown also took the mound in the bottom of the 10th inning and retired Southwestern (2-20) in order with no ball leaving the infield.
Howard Payne finished with eight base hits, including three from Brown. Roberts added two hits while one apiece came from Sam Dollahite, Kyle Kulczyk and Alan Sailors. Roberts and Kulczyk notched two RBIs each while Brown contributed one.
On the mound, Ryan Klose worked 4.2 innings and allowed three runs — one earned — on five hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Dustin McKelver tossed 2.1 innings and surrendered one run on two hits. Brown worked the final three innings to collect the win, yielding one run on one walk with a pair of strikeouts.
HPU took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, but Southwestern grabbed a 3-2 edge in the bottom of the fifth. The Yellow Jackets jumped back in front 4-3 in the sixth, but Southwestern knotted the score at 4 in the bottom of the sixth. Both teams scored once in the eighth.
Howard Payne will host Mary Hardin-Baylor for three games this weekend. Both are 0-3 in ASC West action.
