SWEETWATER — The Brownwood Lions were unable to notch a victory in their pre-district finale Friday as they came up on the short end against former district rival Sweetwater, 5-3.
The Lions (10-7) open District 8-3A action at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Liberty Hill.
In Friday’s contest, the Lions jumped out to a 2-0 lead, but Sweetwater pushed four runs across the plate in the bottom of the fourth inning. Brownwood closed the gap to 4-3 in the top of the fifth, but Sweetwater stretched the lead back to a pair of runs in bottom of the inning.
Both teams finished with four hits as Elijah Salazar, Cojo Guidry, Justin Osteen and Seth Owen all singled for the Lions. Osteen, Scott Kinzler and Trent Carlton collected RBIs for Brownwood.
On the mound, Owen pitched four innings and allowed three runs on five hits with nine strikeouts and four walks. Osteen worked two innings and gave up one hit with two strikeouts and one walk.
