The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets rallied in the ninth inning to capture the series opener Friday, but Mary Hardin-Baylor got its revenge Saturday by sweeping the final two games of the series at Don Shepard Park.

The Yellow Jackets suffered an 8-1 loss in Saturday’s first game, then came up on the short end of an 8-3 decision.

Howard Payne slipped to 1-5 in ASC West action with the losses and 14-12 overall, while UMHB improved to 2-4 in league play and 9-11 overall.

In the opener, the Yellow Jackets were limited to three hits by UMHB’s Chance Ryan and HPU also committed six errors.

Ben Butler pitched five innings for the Yellow Jackets and allowed seven runs — but only one earned — on nine hits with two strikeouts and a pair of walks.

At the plate, Kyle Kulczyk collected two hits for the Yellow Jackets while Sam Dollahite added the other.

HPU scored its lone run in the bottom of the sixth as Carlton Brown led off the inning with a walk and scored when Colton Buzzard reached on a two-out error.

UMHB scored single runs in all but two innings — the second in which the Crusaders were held off the board and the sixth inning where they tallied six runs.

Heath Spencer finished with three hits and two RBIs for UMHB.

In the second game, UMHB jumped out to a six-run lead before the Yellow Jackets scored all three of their runs in the bottom of the fourth.

HPU finished with six hits led by three from Cody Cain and one apiece from Kulczyk, Brown and Alan Sailors.

Brown’s RBI walk in the third plated Buzzard with HPU’s first run, then Kulcyzk followed with a two-RBI single that scored Dollahite and Jake Sadler.

Gilbert Barrera took the loss for Howard Payne, allowing six runs on five hits with four strikeouts and five walks in four innings.

The Yellow Jackets will venture to Schreiner next weekend where they will face the Mountaineers (7-8, 0-3) in one game at 2 p.m. Friday, and two games at 1 p.m. Saturday.
