KERRVILLE — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets tumbled to 1-6 in ASC West competition and 14-13 overall as they dropped a 14-3 decision to the Schreiner Mountaineers Friday night in the first game of a three-game weekend set.

Schreiner improved to 1-3 in ASC West action and 8-18 overall with the victory.

The final two games of the series will begin at 1 p.m. today.

In Friday’s setback, the Yellow Jackets scored the first run in the top of the first, then yielded consecutive 10 runs before lighting up the scoreboard again in the top of the eighth.

Schreiner struck for three runs in the bottom of the third inning and tacked on five more runs in the fourth to seize control.

Corey Howie started on the mound for HPU and gave up eight runs on nine hits with three strikeouts and three walks in four innings. The Yellow Jackets wound up using a total of eight pitchers during the game.

Schreiner’s Matt Valley worked seven innings and allowed one run on five hits with three strikeouts and two walks to notch the win.

Offensive standouts for the Yellow Jackets were Sam Dollahite, with three hits and two runs scored, while Kyle Kulczyk chipped in one hit and one RBI. Carlton Brown, Alan Sailors and Cody Cain had the other hits for the Yellow Jackets.

Schreiner’s Chase Valdez finished with four hits — including a home run — five RBIs and four runs scored.
