The Brownwood Lady Lions earned a share of the first district championship in program history, while the Lions — who already clinched Brownwood’s first district title since 2006 — became the first boys team to finish district play undefeated Friday night.
On Senior Night at Gordon Wood Stadium, the playoff-bound Lions and Lady Lions blanked Lorena by scores of 3-0 and 2-0, respectively, to conclude the regular season.
The Lions (16-2-2, 10-0), winners of 16 of their last 17 games, will face Mexia at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Robinson in first-round playoff action.
The Lady Lions (14-5-1, 9-1), winners of 14 of their last 15, will square off against Waco Connally at 5:30 p.m. Tuesday in Robinson in their postseason opener.
The Brownwood girls will be the No. 2 seed out District 34-4A as they finished tied with Lampasas, but the Lady Badgers owned the goal differential tiebreaker over the Lady Lions.
In Friday’s triumph by the Lady Lions, Alex Bernal scored off a corner kick by Kayli Waddle with 30:57 left in the first half, while Ashley Vaccaro added an insurance goal with 28 minutes left in regulation.
“I’m very proud of the girls and how hard they’ve worked,” said Brownwood head coach J.B. Gibbs. “It’s not always easy with a new coach, but they’ve accepted me and I appreciate that and their willingness to listen and learn. It’s been fun to watch.”
The Lions were held scoreless until 17:19 remained in the contest, then Brownwood reeled off three goals, including two in a five-minute stretch, to complete its historic run.
Dylan Person opened the scoring, Johnny Montgomery added an insurance goal with 13:04 remaining and Aaron Jimenez chipped in the final goal with 2:16 left on the clock.
“One of our goals in the preseason was to win district and go undefeated in district, and this is the first time in school history,” Gibbs said. “Every goal they’ve set up this year they’ve knocked down. Our next goal is to make it further than we did last year, so we’re going to try and knock that down, too.”
