KERRVILLE — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets put a rocky start to ASC West action behind them Saturday with a doubleheader sweep of the Schreiner Mountaineers.

The Yellow Jackets are now in the midst of their first ASC West win streak of the season thanks to victories of 4-3 and 12-3 over Schreiner Saturday. The Mountaineers captured the first game of the series, 14-3, on Friday.

In Saturday’s first victory for HPU (16-13, 3-6), the Yellow Jackets snapped a 2-all tie with two runs in the top of the ninth, then escaped a bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the frame by allowing only one run.

In the second game, HPU turned a 2-1 lead after three innings into a 10-3 cushion going to the sixth thanks to a five-run fourth inning and three-run fifth.

McDugle and Joshua Martinez led the 16-hit HPU onslaught with three each, followed by two apiece from Jake Sadler, Dusty Taylor and Buzzard.

Collecting two RBIs apiece were Martinez, Brown, McDugle and Sam Dollahite.

On the mound, Gilbert Barrera worked five innings of three-run, four-hit ball with three strikeouts and two walks. Jonathan Morris pitched a perfect final two innings with a pair of strikeouts.
