FORT MYERS, Fla. ó Former Brownwood Lion Shelby Miller turned heads with his Major League Baseball debut at the conclusion of the 2012 campaign, and has continued to do so in spring training thus far.

Millerís performance was rewarded on Monday as he was named the fifth starter for the St. Louis Cardinals, earning a spot on the opening day roster.

ďIím really excited,Ē Miller said in an interview on the Cardinalsí official website. ďIím still kind of taking it all in. To be the fifth starter for any team is amazing. To be playing for the St. Louis Cardinals is different. Itís one of the best respected organizations in baseball. Iím looking forward to the opportunity I have. Iím playing behind some of the best players in the league.Ē

Miller made his MLB debut last September and in six appearances, including one start, he was 1-0 with a 1.32 ERA and 16 strikeouts in 13.2 innings.

Miller was a late addition to the postseason roster after an injury to Jaime Garcia. In two rounds, he made two appearances with two runs and four hits allowed in 3.1 innings.

In Grapefruit League action this spring, Miller is 2-0 with a 3.94 ERA and 13 strikeouts over 16 innings.

The Cardinals open the regular season April 1 at Arizona.
