KERRVILLE — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets padded their cushion in the race for one of the four berths from the West Division in the ASC tournament on Wednesday.
The second-place Lady Jackets completed a season sweep of Schreiner with victories of 2-1 and 6-2.
HPU (13-12, 8-4) stands two games behind first-place Texas Lutheran (20-8, 10-2) and two games in front of Mary Hardin-Baylor (11-13, 6-6), Concordia (14-7, 4-4) and Hardin-Simmons (6-15-1, 4-4). The top four teams advance to the postseason.
In Wednesday’s 2-1 triumph, a two-RBI single in the top of sixth inning by Amanda Gober accounted for HPU’s runs. Gober plated Evangelina Tellez, who walked, and Tylene Middleton, who singled, to start the inning.
Schreiner scored its lone run off Baillie Trumble in the bottom of the seventh. Trumble allowed six hits and struck out four.
In the second game, the Lady Jackets tallied three runs in the first inning and added single runs in the second, fifth and sixth.
Middleton doubled home Katie Poerner — who tallied three of HPU’s 11 hits — in the first, Gober singled home Tellez and Jessica Morales tripled home Gober.
In the second, an RBI single from Poerner scored Pricilla Patino. Haleigh Caraway’s RBI single in the fifth knocked in Poerner, while an RBI sacrifice fly from Carissa Zarate scored Morales in the sixth.
Morales and Caraway collected two hits apiece while, in the circle, Caraway surrendered two runs on eight hits with one strikeout to notch the win.
HPU will visit Southwestern at 1 p.m. Friday in a non-conference doubleheader.
