The weekend of March 23-24, Victory Life Academy participated in the state arts competition and the district speech and drama competition at Texas Association of Private and Parochial Schools (TAPPS) competition at Concordia University in Austin. The district meet for the arts category was held on March 4. TAPPS is the equivalency of the public schools’ UIL.
Kaylie Simmons placed second in district and second in state with her mixed media piece, “Music in the Air,” as well as fifth in the district with her painting. Randon Ware placed fourth in district and forth in state with his computer rendered art, “Soul of Fire.” Lisa Nguyen’s “Beauty of the Sky to the Wonders of the Earth” placed sixth place at state in the photography-Creative & Experimental category.
Shannon McNeill placed third in state and Tori Patton placed sixth in state in the category of fashion design-jewelry.
TAPPS speech and drama competition includes modern oratory, poetry, solo acting, prose, duet acting and various art categories.
Several VLA students competed in the district speech and drama categories. In modern oratory, Torrie Patton competed with “They’re spraying what?!” In prose, Reba Shaffer presented “Bless your Heart, Tramp,” and Destiny Salazar presented “Dandelion Wine.” Competitors competing in the poetry category included Lyn Norway with “The Homecoming Queen,” Julianne Thomas with “The Waiting Rooms” and Sam Haley with “The Bluebonnet Cafe.”
In the drama category, duet acting, Reba Shaffer and Kaylie Simmons performed “The Foreigner” and Sam Haley and Jaydyn Thedford performed “Greater Tuna.” In solo acting, Destiny Salazar performed “Say Goodnight, Gracie.”
The state competition for the speech and drama categories of the competition will be on April 5-6 at Concordia in Austin.
