The Brownwood Lady Lions completed the first half of District 8-3A softball action alone in third place following Friday’s 5-1 home victory over Llano.

All of Brownwood’s hits and runs occurred in two innings — the second and the fifth.

Meanwhile, Sydney Laws struck out 14 and surrendered just three hits in the circle.

During the bottom of the second, Alyson Finnigan led off with a single, Kristen Fuentes drew a walk and Ashley Gomez singled to load the bases. Shelbi Winstead followed with an RBI single to push the first run across the plate.

Following a double play, Tori Burkett came through with a two-RBI base hit off the bag at first base to extend Brownwood’s cushion to 3-0.

Llano closed to within 3-1 in the top of fourth as the only walk surrendered by Laws, followed by a double, resulted in an eventual RBI ground out for the Lady Jackets.

Brownwood tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth as Burkett tripled into the right field corner with one out and later scored on an RBI ground out by Halie Hipsher. With two outs, Cherita George walked, Laws hit a bullet single to center field and Finnigan delivered an RBI single up the middle.

The Lady Lions (10-10-1, 3-2) will start the second half of District 8-3A action at 7 p.m. Tuesday when they host Burnet. Brownwood went on the road and defeated Burnet in the 8-3A opener by a 4-0 count on March 15.
