EARLY — After sitting out Monday night with a first-round bye, the Brownwood Mustangs dusted off their bats and blistered the ball with Cole Fowler leading the way in a 19-3 victory over Comanche Tuesday in TTAB 14U District 2 Tournament action.
Fowler recorded an inside-the-park and finished the last two innings as the relief pitcher, striking out six consecutive batters. The game was called after five and a half innings due to the 10-run “mercy rule.”
The Mustangs got the job done with a large crowd of Brownwood backers in attendance at the Early City Park. With temperatures exceeding 100 degrees, Comanche seemed to wilt under the heat.
“It was a true team effort,” Fowler said. “I felt really good out there pitching. We stayed back on the pitches and had good hitting all night.”
The Mustangs got their first eight runs in the first two innings then exploded in the third with an 11-run flurry.
Contributing triples were Dylan Agan, Fowler and Tucker Roberts. Doubles were hit by Agan, Blaine Hughes, Devon Jefferson and Fowler, with a pair.
Singles were chipped in by Fowler, Sergio Gutierrez, Triston Revada and Martin Ibarra, with two.
Mustang coach Shane Agan told his team after the game, “We played clean ball out there today. We just have to keep it up as the teams get tougher in the tournament.”
Coach Jim Fowler remarked to the team, “Good job out there tonight adjusting to their pitching changes.”
Comanche changed pitchers four times in an attempt to stop the Mustangs’ heavy bats.
Mustang pitcher Blaine Hughes was credited with the victory, striking out two batters in the first three innings and giving up three runs. Hughes had plenty of run support in the win.
