With 50 cupcakes, Bailey Riley won the first Cupcake Wars event at Heartland Mall on June 29.
“The event was very successful and drew more than 50 people to watch,” Heartland Mall Manager Brittany Edwards said. “It was awesome to see the talent that is in our community, especially how young the talent starts.”
Unlike the popular Food Network TV show, contestants were able to bring pre-baked cupcakes for the mall’s contest. Riley faced off against Sandra (Gabi) Enriquez in three rounds of competition.
In the first and second rounds, Riley and Enriquez decorated three cupcakes for each round to the themes of “Summer lovin’” followed by “Get your game on.”
“They were given the themes for the first and second round the day before,” Edwards said. “They had 15 minutes to decorate three cupcakes for the judges in those two rounds.”
For the last round, the contestants had 30 minutes to decorate their remaining cupcakes to a theme of their choice and arrange them in a display for the judges. The contestants were judged on texture, overall taste, creativity and appearance.
Judges for the competition were members of the teen board and Teresa Cooley.
“The mall will most definitely be hosting this event again and hopefully it continues to grow and becomes an annual event,” Edwards said. “It was awesome and we are going to have it again in the fall and hopefully get some of the students who are involved in Home Economics to enter the contest.”
