With one swing of the bat, the Early Diamondbacks went from the prospect of having to play a second game to capture the TTAB 10U District 4 championship to state tournament qualifiers.
Tyson Tyler’s walk-off three-run inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the sixth inning completed the Diamondbacks’ comeback as they stunned the Brownwood Astros, 6-5, at the Massey Sports Complex Thursday night.
With Early trailing 5-3 heading to the bottom of the sixth, Bradly Roman reached on an infield single against Astro pitcher Xadrian Mares, then Aiden Frerichs drew a walk. With runners on second and third and no outs, Tyler ripped a ball to right-center field and raced around the base paths, narrowly avoiding the tag at home plate to secure the victory.
As the umpire signaled a safe call, the Diamondbacks erupted in a euphoric cheer, while the Astros wiped tears from their eyes as their stellar season came to a close.
Early will next compete in the TTAB 10U State Tournament July 22 in Temple. The Diamondbacks will be one of 14 teams in the field.
The Astros, down 2-0 after one inning, surged in front 3-2 in the top of the third inning as two-out RBI doubles by Logan Stone and David Long drove in Blaize Espinoza, who singled, and Stone.
The Diamondbacks pulled even at 3 in the bottom of third as Brenen Thompson reached on a three-base error and eventually stole home.
Brownwood moved in front, 4-3, in the fifth as Josiah Noble singled and scored when Espinoza reached on a two-out dropped pop fly. The Astros added an insurance run in the sixth as Mares walked and scored on a two-out error.
Early grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first inning as Jakob Hataway singled and beat a throw to home plate when Francisco Villarreal grounded back to shortstop. On via fielder’s choice, Villarreal later came home on an RBI ground out by Roman.
Roman started on the mound for Early and worked 5.1 innings for the Diamondbacks, striking out six. Brandon Hamrick wound up tallying the win as he collected the final two outs.
For Brownwood, Noble pitched the first three innings and fanned two before giving way to Espinoza, who worked two innings and struck out four prior to Mares being summoned to the mound.
