EARLY — The San Saba Dillos remained alive in the TTAB 14U District 2 Tournament by defeating the Early Hurricanes, 13-3, Wednesday. The game was called in the fifth inning due to the mercy rule.

Early pitcher Triston Horton was throwing strikes and fastballs to the San Saba hitters, who adjusted to the speed of his pitches and scored six runs in the first two innings. The Hurricanes rallied back, scoring three runs, but San Saba pulled away as the game progressed.

Early’s Cotton Bank came in as a relief pitcher with one out and two on base in the bottom of the fourth. By then, the Hurricanes were facing a five-run deficit which only got worse. San Saba didn’t necessarily hit the ball well, but the Canes’ mistakes piled up with six fielding errors.

The Canes’ coaches provided everyone on the roster an opportunity to play in the final inning after the game was out of reach.

In other tournament action Wednesday, the Brownwood Athletics defeated the Brownwood Mustangs, 3-2, to advance to Friday’s championship game. The Mustangs, at 8 tonight, will face the winner of the 5 p.m. game between San Saba and Comanche. The 8 p.m. winner will advance to the final and join the Mustangs as state qualifiers.

The tournament champion and runner-up will compete in the TTAB 14U state tournament in Hillsboro beginning July 22.
