EARLY — The Brownwood Athletics triumphed over the Brownwood Mustangs, 10-6, in the championship game of the TTAB 14U District 2 Tournament Friday at Early City Park.

Both the champion A’s and runner-up Mustangs will advance to the 12-team state tournament in Hillsboro on July 22.

The A’s took the lead in the second inning and never looked back, as winning pitcher Caleb Hernandez pitched 5.1 innings, striking out eight and allowing five runs. Hernandez’s primary pitch of the night was a curve ball, which the Mustang hitters had a hard time adjusting to tonight. Mason Prosise came on in relief and pitched the remainder of the game, striking out four batters.

Mustangs starting pitcher Devon Jefferson had control problems early. Walking four batters and striking out four, he allowed five runs in 2.2 innings.

Dylan Agan came on in relief for Jefferson and got the last out of the third inning. When the Mustangs returned to the field in the next inning however, Agan hit the ground writhing in pain after a hard fastball. Agan, who pitched six innings in the last few days, had a problem with his pitching elbow, according to coach James Hughes. Agan was pulled for Cole Fowler in the fifth inning.

Fowler took over for the Mustangs with a 5-3 deficit. Prosise went all the way home on a walk and two throwing errors by the Mustangs. Fowler gave up five runs and seven hits as the final Mustangs pitcher.

After Prosise took over in relief for Hernandez, the score was 7-5 in favor of the Athletics. The Mustangs gave it a run in the fifth inning with singles by Jefferson and Zack Cook to make it 7-6. With a chance to tie the ball game and a runner on third, Fowler struck out at the plate, a victim of a Prosise fastball, stranding a runner at third base.

The A’s extended their lead their next time up with Justin Buchanan hitting a triple and driving in Grant Fanara, who walked. Prosise then got his chance to contribute at the plate, doubling in Fanara making the score 9-6 A’s.

Next up was Caden Judkins, who attempted to stretch out a single to centerfield into a double, but was thrown out at second. Buchanan scored before Judkins was tagged, which made the score 10-6 Athletics.

The Mustangs had one last opportunity in the bottom of the sixth, but Prosise struck out the first two batters, Sergio Gutierrez and Triston Revada for two fast outs. Tucker Roberts was up next for the Stangs, and drew a walk. Martin Ybarra was the Mustangs’ last batter and went down for Prosise’s fourth strikeout.
