ZEPHYR — In a high scoring game full of action, the Public School All-Stars defeated the Private School All-Stars, 78-62, in a slugfest at the Bulldog Stadium Saturday night.
The Public school team was led by a pair of local kids, Chance Bush and Gunner Mann of Richland Springs, as they scored on virtually very possession to dominate the game.
Bush, the offensive MVP, started off the scoring flurry with a 17-yard slant reception to the corner of the end zone. When Public got on defense, Kameron Buchanan and Ryan Thomas sacked the Private quarterback to drop him for a 5-yard loss. This set the tone for the evening for Public. Despite giving up 62 points, Public always stayed two or three steps ahead of the Private All-Stars.
Private fired back on a third down touchdown to Tim Muenzler, and the two-point kick were good.
Bush then ran 17 yards off tackle for Public’s second score. The two-kick was no good and Public then led, 14-8.
Private fired back with a 35-yard touchdown straight down the middle to Eli Achilles. The two-point try was good and it was 16-14 Private. The Public defense made a stop and Private scored again with Achilles, rolling out to his left and racing down the sideline.
The two-point kicks was good, putting up Private 24-14.
Public quickly answered back with Bush taking a pitchout and sprinting 45 yards down the sideline for a quick six,to trim the Private All-Stars’ lead to 24-22.
Defense was key for Public as they scored next on an interception by Jared Roberts for a touchdown that put Public ahead for good, 30-24.
On the next Private series, the quarterback dropped the ball and Ben Ramsey recovered the fumble to set up yet another Public score.
Bush then scampered for a 25-yard score putting Public ahead 38-24.
The Public defense held and Bush scored again on the next possession to stretch the Public lead to 46-24.
Private answered with another score of its own as Achilles took a pitchout 40 yards down the sideline for a score. The two-point kick was good making the score 46-32.
The game was stopped for about 40 minutes for an injury on the field to Thomas Roden, of Public, who was transported to by Guardian EMS to Brownwood Regional Medical Center. There was no information on his injury or condition at press time.
Roden gave a thumbs up to the crowd and remarked “I’ll be fine,” as they took him off the field in a stretcher.
There were only 11 seconds left until halftime, but Bush pulled double duty as quarterback and threw a strike to Levi Taylor for a touchdown. The two-point kick was good and Public went up 54-32.
Due to the lengthy break to tend to Roden, the halftime intermission was eliminated and action quickly resumed.
Private fumbled the ball on the Public 30 and Brody Halfmann scooped up the recovery for Public.
Tyler Russell scored the next touchdown for Public, taking a post route 36 yards for a touchdown. The two-point kick was good as Public began to pull away with a comfortable 60-32 lead.
Public led by as many as 30 points before Private was able to reply with scores of its own to make the final score respectable.
The Most Valuable Players were announced shortly after the game. Bush and Achilles took the honors as offensive and defensive players of the game.
“Tonight was amazing,” said Bush. “It’s great to be able to practice with this caliber of players all week. They are all all-stars, that’s why they’re here.”
