EARLY — In the 8U Player Pitch division of the TTAB state championships Monday night, the Cameron Astros and the Malakoff Orioles advanced to the winner’s bracket.
Malakoff downed Copperas Cove, 9-5, to advance to play the Early Red Sox, who drew a first-round bye. Malakoff then dished out an 8-3 loss to tournament host Early.
The Red Sox got on the scoreboard first with a home run by Jordyn Mickerson. The momentum wouldn’t last for Early as that would be the first and last lead for the Red Sox. Malakoff pitcher Caleb Norris was virtually unstoppable as the Oriole defense made critical stops when the Red Sox were able to make contact.
Early pitcher Sebastian Constancia had control problems early but was able to strike out the side in the third inning to keep the Red Sox close. Constancia pitched three innings, fanning five batters and walking four while giving up five runs. In the fourth, the Red Sox went to relief pitcher Caleb McCullough, who struck out seven and allowed three runs.
Norris struck out the side twice, keeping the Red Sox hitters at bay with his fastball for much of the night.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Red Sox added two more runs but came up short as Norris got his 10th strikeout.
Today in the winners bracket Cameron will play Malakoff at 8 p.m. In the elimination bracket, Eustace will play Early and Copperas Cove will play Bosqueville, both at 6 p.m.
