Howard Payne University head women’s basketball coach Meia Daniels on Tuesday announced the hiring of Mercedes Corona as assistant basketball coach. Corona is a 2012 graduate of Schreiner.

“I am excited for Mercedes to join our Howard Payne family,” Daniels said. “She has a big passion for basketball and with her on board now, I'm really excited to get this season started.”

Corona played three seasons at Schreiner and graduated early, not using her final season of eligibility. She worked last season as the recruiting/film coordinator intern for the women’s basketball team under then Schreiner head coach Matt Wallis.

"I want to say thank you to Howard Payne University and Coach Daniels for the opportunity to work with the women's basketball team,” Corona said.. “I know the tradition Howard Payne women's basketball has and I am more than ready to live up to expectations."

This past season, Corona also worked with the Schreiner sports information department keeping stats and helping with game day operations.

A 2009 graduate of Granger High School, Corona was named all-region and district offensive MVP. Since high school, Corona has been involved with many community events including working basketball camps, volunteering at the Boys and Girls Club and serving as a YMCA youth basketball coach.
