LUBBOCK — The No. 22 Brownwood Lady Lions began the post-Christmas portion of their basketball season by returning to the win column with a 57-28 victory over Andrews Thursday afternoon in their first game at the 55th annual Lubbock Caprock tournament.

The Lady Lions, coming off a 43-23 home loss to No. 17 Abilene Wylie on Dec. 20, jumped out to a 10-0 lead after one quarter, were in front 30-8 at halftime and took a 43-17 advantage over Andrews to the fourth period.

Brownwood featured a balanced scoring attack as four players finished in double figures — Keeta Vaccaro and Trejouir Wilson with 12 points apiece, Unique Jefferson with 11 and Alyson Finnigan with 10. Also scoring for the Lady Lions were Kodi Ribble with six points and Ashley Vaccaro and Vici Henry with three points apiece.

Keeta Vaccaro also finished with six steals, Ashley Vaccaro chipped in five steals and seven assists and Finnigan collected 10 rebounds.

In Thursday’s second game, which began at 9 p.m., the Lady Lions came out on the short end against Class 5A Lubbock Coronado, 65-46.

Leading the way for the Lady Lions — who trailed 36-27 at halftime — was Keeta Vaccaro with 17 points followed by Wilson with 16, Finnigan with seven, Jefferson with five and Henry with one point.

Finnigan’s six boards and three assists were team bests for Brownwood, but the Lady Lions were limited to only six steals and no player tallied more than one.

Brownwood shot 52 percent (15 of 29) on its two-pointers and 67 percent (10 of 15) at the free throw line, but converted just 14 percent (2 of 14) on three-pointers. Brownwood was also held to 18 total rebounds.

The Lady Lions (11-4) resume tournament action later today.

The Brownwood Lions (0-10), meanwhile, begin play in the Gatesville tournament today.
