MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Playing their first game in 14 days, the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets were denied in their quest for their first win streak of the season.

Coming off an 88-84 American Southwest Conference victory over Hardin-Simmons on Dec. 14, the Yellow Jackets dropped a 99-86 decision to the John Carroll Blue Streaks Saturday in the opening round of the Rhodes College Christmas Invitational.

Howard Payne (2-6) will face host Rhodes College (6-4) at noon Sunday in the tournament’s third-place game. John Carroll (7-2), will meet Austin College (4-3) — a 91-86 winner over Rhodes — in Sunday’s 2 p.m. championship game.

The Yellow Jackets scored the first two points of the game, but were in catch up mode throughout the rest of the contest as John Carroll raced out to a 55-43 halftime advantage.

John Carroll converted 48 percent (38 of 80) percent of its field goals, including 10 three-pointers as the Blue Streaks drained 32 percent (10 of 31) of their treys. JCU turned the ball over 16 times compared to 18 by HPU, and the Blue Streaks pulled down 48 rebounds, with 20 coming on the offensive end, to the Yellow Jackets’ 38.

Howard Payne converted 43 percent (29 of 67) of its shots and 77 percent (23 of 30) of its free throws, but only drained 5 of 15 three-pointers (33 percent).

Brandon Gould paced the Yellow Jackets with 22 points while Donovan Ford chipped in 20 points. Also finishing in double figures were Bryan Adams with 15 points and Christian Davis with 10. Other scorers for HPU included Quelan Lancaster with eight points trailed by Nigele Robertson with seven and Ross Whittet and Jorden Young with two points each.

For JCU, Joey Vuyancih tallied 16 points followed by Danny Wallack and Will Starks with 15 each, Jake Hollinger with 13, David Linane with 10, David Hendrickson and Simon Kucharewicz with seven apiece, Jordan Murphy with six, Nicholas Rukel and Doug Caputo with four each and Joe Leary with two points.
