MEMPHIS, Tenn. — The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets suffered their fifth loss of the season by 10 points or less Sunday as they dropped a 72-65 decision to host Rhodes in the finale of the Rhodes College Christmas Invitational.

Howard Payne was unable to collect a victory in either of its games in Tennessee, falling to John Carroll by a 99-86 count on Saturday.

In the loss to Rhodes (7-4), the Yellow Jackets led 38-36 at halftime but couldn’t hold the advantage.

HPU shot 35 percent (20 of 57) overall and 86 percent (19 of 22) at the free throw line, owned a 33-32 edge in rebounds and turned over the ball 13 times to Rhodes’ 15.

But Rhodes converted 43 percent (19 of 44) of it shots overall, including 11 of 21 three-pointers.

Donovan Ford scored 20 points for HPU trailed by 13 from Brandon Gould, 10 from Bryan Adams, nine from Quelan Lancaster, five from Blake Morrow, four from Christian Davis and two points each from Jorden Young and Nigele Robertson.

Patrick McGrail scored 20 points to pace Rhodes.

The 10th-place Yellow Jackets (2-7, 2-4) resume ASC action at 7:30 p.m. Thursday when they host Ozarks (4-4, 2-3), then third-place UT-Tyler (5-4, 4-2) visits at 3 p.m. Saturday.
