Delayed two days by weather, the Howard Payne Lady Jackets finally started their softball season with an 8-0 home loss to Pacific University of Oregon Saturday.

The Lady Jackets mustered just three hits in the five-inning run-ruled affair, collected by Amanda Gober, Pricilla Patino and Tayler Rushing. Jessica Morales and Shandi Winstead drew walks, while Amanda Cruddas was hit by a pitch.

Allie Sims pitched three innings and allowed three runs with one strikeout and three walks to notch the win for Pacific, while Maddie Collura worked the final two innings and recorded three strikeouts.

In the circle for HPU, Morgan Ashmore started and yielded six runs, one earned, on four hits with one strikeout. Rushing tossed the final four innings and surrendered two runs on five hits with one walk and one strikeout.

HPU trailed 4-0 after one inning, 6-0 through two and gave up single runs in the third and fourth frames.

The Lady Jackets (0-1) return to action at 1 p.m. today as they welcome Austin College for a doubleheader.
