The Howard Payne Yellow Jackets improved to 3-1 on the season, capturing the finale of their weekend series with the University of Dallas by a 13-6 count Sunday afternoon at Don Shepard Park.
Trailing 5-4 heading to the bottom of the seventh inning, the Yellow Jackets erupted for nine runs to open an eight-run advantage.
Howard Payne finished with 13 hits as Joshua Martinez led the way with three followed by two each from Carlton Brown, Matthew Daniel, Dustin DeJohn and John Elmore. Elmore’s three RBIs were a team-high for HPU while Brown, Martinez and Kyle Kulczyk drove in two each. DeJohn, Jake Sadler and Cody Cain also added RBIs.
On the mound, Corey Howie started and worked the first five innings, allowing four runs on nine hits with five strikeouts and one walk. Jamie Boyd, who picked up the win, pitched three innings and surrendered one run on one hit with one strikeout and two walks. Nathan Weyrauch gave up one run on one hit in two-thirds of an inning and Dalton Sembritzky recorded the final out.
During HPU’s nine-run seventh, Kulczyk led off with a walk, Daniel doubled him over to third and DeJohn’s RBI infield single plated Kulczyk with the tying run. The Yellow Jackets went in front, 6-5, when Elmore singled up the middle to plate Daniel.
Martinez followed with a two-RBI triple to left-center field to plate Elmore and DeJohn, then Martinez scored on a wild pitch to increase the lead to 9-5. Kulczyk’s two-RBI single to center scored Brown, who reached on a single, and Cain, who walked, to boost the lead to 11-5. Elmore and Sadler followed with back-to-back bases-loaded walks to bring home Daniel, who singled, and DeJohn, who walked, to cap the scoring.
The Yellow Jackets grabbed a 4-1 lead in the bottom of the second, but did not score again until the seventh.
In the second, DeJohn tripled with one out and scored on an RBI single by Elmore, which tied the game. Cain then singled home Elmore to give HPU its first lead, while Brown’s two-RBI single brought home Cain and Martinez, who reached on a single, for a three-run cushion.
The Yellow Jackets are off until Feb. 21 when they host Mary Hardin-Baylor in their American Southwest Conference opener.
