Testimony continued Thursday in 35th District Court in the attempted capital murder trial of Michael Bien, who is accused of trying to hire a hit man to kill his ex-brother-in-law.
Jurors heard testimony from Texas Ranger Danny Briley and recordings of phone conversations between Bien and Bien's longtime friend Mickey Westerman. The prosecution alleges that Bien sought out Westerman to put him in touch with a hit man to kill his ex-wife's parents and later her brother. Westerman ended up working with the Rangers as a confidential informant.
District Attorney Micheal Murray told jurors in his opening argument that Bien had wanted to cause his ex-wife to suffer after their marriage ended.
Defense attorney Jason Johnson told jurors that Bien has fallen prey to entrapment. Johnson sought to establish through his cross-examination of Briley that the recordings of phone conversation showed that Westerman had goaded Bien down a path of pursuing a murder for hire scheme.
