Mary Sims Nolen, 93 years old, of Brownwood, Texas, and formerly of Lufkin, Texas “slept away” on Tuesday, Feb. 11, 2014, in Brownwood.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Thursday, Feb. 20, at Greater Faith Community Church, with Bishop Aaron C. Blake officiating. A visitation will be held from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 19, at Brownwood Funeral Home, 2512 Belle Plain in Brownwood.

Mary Nolen was born March 31, 1920, in Webster Parish, Louisana, to the parentage of James and Minnie Sims. Mrs. Nolen received Christ at an early age and started working when she was very young. Her family moved to Arkadelphia, Ark., then to Altheimer, Ark., where the family spent most of their time. While living in Altheimer, Mrs. Nolen worked at a college in nearby Arkadelphia for several years. In 1951, she relocated her family back to Louisiana and remained there until 1963. In 1963, the family moved to Lufkin, Texas, where they remained until Mrs. Nolen moved to Brownwood, Texas, in 2008.

Mrs. Nolen loved her family and was very protective of them. She was a people person who loved and would care for anyone. She had exquisite taste and purchased the finest of items for the home, clothing, perfumes, and other things. Mrs. Nolen raised her children, a grandchild, a great-grandchild, and cared for many more of the family’s’ babies. Up until the day she slept away, Mrs. Nolen continued to read her newspaper daily, and she had a special love for peppermint candies.

Mrs. Nolen leaves to cherish her memory her son, Freddie Nolen (and Valine) of Minden, Louisiana; her daughter, Doris Jones of Brownwood, Texas; and her grandchildren, Sharon Mims Owens, Carolyn Jones Nelson, Lynette Jones Reed, Jeanette Jones Fuller, Brenda Marie Jones, Carla Jones Stidom, Gregory Jones, Marvin Jones, Jr., Doris Jones Easley, Mary Esther Jones, John Jones, James Jones, Shelene Amber Jones, Clarence Nolen Jr., Gracie Ann Nolen, Tommy Nolen, Paul Nolen, Amanda Nolen, Jennifer Ann Nolen-Banks, Leonard Delay Nolen-Banks, Jackie Nolen, Charolette Nolen, Deborah Ann Nolen, Benjamin Nolen, Marvin Nolen, Sabrina Nolen, Christine Nolen, Nicole Nolen, Valerie, Freddie Nolen Jr.; and numerous great-grandchildren, great-great-grandchildren, and a host of extended family and friends.

Mary Sims Nolen was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie Nolen; and two of her sons, Clarence Nolen Jr. and Tommy Neal Nolen.

Mrs. Nolen was just over one month away from her 94th birthday. She lived a long and blessed life.
