LONGVIEW — LeTourneau’s Aaron Frizzell buried a three-pointer with 18 seconds remaining as the Howard Payne Yellow Jackets’ hopes for an American Southwest Conference tournament berth were dashed Thursday night.

The Yellow Jackets dropped a 64-61 decision to last-place LeTourneau, while East Texas Baptist knocked off Sul Ross, 87-76, to mathematically eliminate Howard Payne from postseason contention.

Howard Payne (5-19, 5-16) — bidding for its first postseason berth since 2008 — lost for the 12th time in 14 games.

Neither team led by more than two points throughout the second half until LeTourneau reeled off six straight points to open a 58-53 edge with 4:15 remaining.

HPU drew even at 59 on a jumper by Quelan Lancaster with 1:45 left and the game was again knotted at 61 when Jorden Young scored with 48 seconds to go.

The Yellow Jackets trailed 32-31 at halftime despite leading by as many as four points in the opening half.

Brandon Gould scored 22 points for Howard Payne followed by a double-double of 16 points and 12 rebounds from Lancaster. Donovan Ford added 11 points trailed by four from Blake Arbogast, three each from Young and Nigele Robertson and two points from Ross Whittet.

LeTourneau (5-18, 4-16) received a game-high 32 points from Justin Jones.

The Yellow Jackets will conclude their season at East Texas Baptist (9-14, 7-13) at 3 p.m. Saturday.
