MARSHALL — The Howard Payne Lady Jackets will carry a four-game win streak into the American Southwest Conference women’s basketball tournament after concluding the regular season with a 74-65 victory at East Texas Baptist Saturday.

The fourth-place Lady Jackets (16-9, 15-7) will face fifth-place Louisiana College (15-9, 13-8) — which they swept during the regular season — Friday in Tyler in opening round action.

In Saturday’s victory, the Lady Jackets held ETBU to just 33 percent (24 of 73) shooting from the floor, including 12 percent (2 of 17) from beyond the three-point arc. Howard Payne also owned a 52-46 edge in rebounds.

The Lady Jackets connected on 39 percent (25 of 65) of their shots, including 33 percent (6 of 18) of their treys, and also knocked down 82 percent (18 of 22) of their free throws. ETBU sank only 65 percent (15 of 23) of its free throw tries.

Sarah Van Remmen scored a career-high 23 points to spark Howard Payne trailed by 20 from Danyel Bradley, who also grabbed a team-high nine rebounds, and 17 points from Britani Gattis, who drained three three-pointers. Also scoring for HPU were Kalin Hanna with eight points followed by Sarahi Castillo with four and Kyndal Broome with two points.

ETBU’s Jasmine Davis led all scorers with 24 points while Amanda Rucker chipped in a double-double of 14 points and 11 rebounds. Sadé Murrell also finished in double figures with 13 points.

Clinging to a 52-50 lead with 6:51 remaining, the Lady Jackets’ perimeter game caught fire which resulted in a 14-2 charge and HPU’s largest lead of 14 points, 66-52, with 3:21 remaining. Gattis sank all three of her treys during the run and scored 11 points overall, while Bradley also buried a three-pointer.

For the second consecutive game, the Lady Jackets dominated play in the opening moments. After jumping out to an 18-2 lead at LeTourneau Thursday, Howard Payne was in front 9-2 Saturday just 3:42 into the contest.

ETBU closed the gap to 13-12 with 10:15 left before halftime, and again crept within a point, 24-23, with 4:47 remaining until the break. The Lady Jackets, however, closed the half with six of the final eight points — two each from Hanna, Bradley and Van Remmen — to open a 30-25 advantage at intermission.

Leading 40-36 with 15:29 remaining, HPU reeled off eight of the next nine points — six by Van Remmen and two from Bradley — to regain a double-digit advantage, 48-37, with 11:41 to go.

ETBU tallied 13 of the next 17 points to put a scare into the Lady Jackets, but HPU then pulled away to secure the victory.
