BRECKENRIDGE — The Bangs Dragons’ five-run lead was shaved to one before the defending Region I-2A champions erupted for six runs in the top of the sixth inning of a 12-4 victory at Breckenridge Monday.
The Dragons (3-3) pounded out 14 hits, led by a 3-for-5, four-RBI performance from Chance Beck. Chane Burton finished 2-for-3 with an RBI and three runs scored, while Brady Glover and Tanner Shaw each contributed a pair of hits and scored twice. J.T. Newton went 2-for-5 with two RBIs, while David Wells added one hit and two RBIs and Robert Richardson and Payton Hamrick notched one hit apiece.
On the mound, Beck tossed three innings and allowed two runs on four hits with five strikeouts; Burton worked an inning and gave up one run on a pair of hits and a walk; and Newton pitched three innings and yielded one run on two hits with three strikeouts and a walk.
Clinging to a 5-4 lead going to the top of sixth, Chuy Alvarado walked, Shaw singled and Burton drew a free pass to load the bases with no outs. Burton then worked a bases-loaded walk to push the lead to 6-4, while Shaw came home on an error. Beck followed with a two-RBI single that stretched the lead to 9-4.
Wells then walked, Robertson reached on a base hit and Hamrick singled home Wells ahead of Newton’s RBI sacrifice fly that plated Richardson.
Bangs jumped out to a 5-0 lead thanks to a pair of runs in the second inning and three more in the third.
During the second inning, Burton and Beck singled to start the inning, then Wells reached on an error on a sacrifice bunt that allowed Burton to score. With two outs, Newton’s RBI single brought home Beck.
In the third inning, Glover and Burton reached on consecutive one-out singles. Beck’s RBI double knocked in Glover, while Wells followed with a two-RBI single that plated Burton and Beck.
Breckenridge trimmed the deficit to 5-2 in the third, then added single runs in the third and fourth innings.
The Dragons pushed across their final run in the top of the seventh inning as Shaw led off with a single and scored on an RBI sac fly by Beck.
Bangs returns to action at the Eastland tournament beginning Friday.
