Brownwood Art Association Photo Group prepares for sixth annual event

The Brownwood Art Association Photo Group is in the final stages of preparation for the Sixth Annual Members Exhibit titled “Anything Goes” which will be open and free to the general public Oct. 6-27, at the Art Center, 215 Fisk Ave.  The hours of the exhibit are to be announced this week.

The exhibit will feature between 15 and 20 local photographers that are members of the Photo Group and will have more than 100 fine art photographs.  The theme for this year’s exhibit is “Anything Goes,” meaning that any subject matter will be on display.

“The theme of ‘Anything Goes’ was chosen to showcase the variety of subject matter and expertise that our members have in fine art photography,” said Roger Levesque, a founding member of the Photo Group.

The Brownwood Chamber of Commerce along with the Brownwood Art Association will host an opening reception of the exhibit as part of the ongoing Chambers Business After Hours event from 5 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the Art Center.  In addition to displaying the photographers’ artwork, the Photo Group will be announcing the Photographer of the Year.  There will be an opportunity for all to vote for their favorite image for People’s Choice Award, and all photographs will be available for purchase.

“Over the last six years the level of quality of fine art photography has grown so much and this latest exhibit is simply  magnificent,” said Fred Spencer, also a founding member of the Photo Group.

The Photographer of the Year is selected from 11 monthly winners and some 200 plus submitted photos.  The monthly winner and the Photographer of the Year are voted on and chosen by the members of the Photo Group by secret ballot. The winner will receive an engraved crystal award and a one year membership in the Brownwood Art Association.

“If the quality of photographs that were presented throughout this year’s monthly Photographer of the Month competition are any indication of what is going to be displayed in this exhibit, it’s going to an exciting visual display of fine art photography,” Levesque said.

Entertainment will be provided by Abe Cooper, Spirit of Texas Winery will have a wine tasting of their wines, and Common Grounds will be catering the event.

“It is a terrific event,” Spencer said. “There will be fabulous hors d’oeuvres, wonderful music and absolutely incredible photography.”

Sponsors of this event are  Exxon Mobil, Spirit of Texas Winery, ASAP Creative Arts, Citizens National Bank, Brownwood Bulletin, KBWD Radio Station, Wendlee Broadcasting, Arts Council of Brownwood, and Brookshire’s, Mr. and Mrs. John Harkey and Brownwood News.

The Brownwood Art Association Photo Group is an informal organization consisting of members interested in the art of photography and to promoting the visual arts in our community.  Membership is open to anyone having an interest in photography or just wanting to learn more about photography.

There are no dues or any special requirement to join the group.  All that is necessary is to attend one of the group’s meetings and let them have some contact information and you are automatically a member.

Several years ago a mentoring program was started to aid those wanting basic instructions on operating cameras and learning various software programs. In addition to the mentoring program, the group has monthly competitions, two major exhibits, and several photo excursions throughout the year.

“As part of our mentoring program this is a wonderful opportunity for many of our new members to show their artwork, and gain confidence in showing their photographs to the public,” Levesque said.

Monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday of each month at 6 p.m. at the Art Center, 215 Fisk Ave.  There’s usually a short business meeting to discuss plans and/or upcoming events, a showing of photographs for the monthly competition of selecting a “Photographer of the Year,” and open discussions and critiques.
