A prank between neighbors got out of hand Tuesday in a south Brownwood neighborhood, resulting in a police response after a man said his neighbor had held a gun to his head and dry-fired the firearm.
Officers converged on the suspect’s home in the 3300 block of Second and ordered him outside, police said. The suspect said he had a knife but not a gun, and police did not find a gun.
According to a report by Ian Baker:
A man said his neighbor from across the street came over to his home, as he frequently does, and tried to scare him by sneaking up behind him. The man said he’d known his neighbor since childhood and felt they were “somewhat friends.”
But this time, the two argued, the man told officers. The man said his neighbor pulled out a pistol, put it against the man’s head and pulled the trigger. The man “heard the distinct click of the pistol being dry fired,” Baker’s report states.
Other officers arrived and formed a plan to contact the suspect in the safest way possible. Two officers covered the front door with rifles, and another officer covered the back door. Baker knocked on a window and ordered the man outside.
The suspect told officers he goes over to his neighbor’s house to playfully scare him, but this time, the neighbor reacted differently and they started arguing. The suspect yelled “is that a gun?” The suspect said he had a black knife in his waistband but no gun.
The suspect, who was extremely intoxicated, allowed officers to search his home. Officers did not find a gun and believed there was not enough evidence to hold him, but issued a criminal trespass warning at the neighbor’s request.
