The Brownwood Area Chamber of Commerce held a ribbon-cutting ceremony for One Source Express Care, an urgent care clinic located inside United Express, on Tuesday morning.
One Source Express Care opened in November, and is affiliated with Brownwood Regional Medical Center. Situated next to the United pharmacy and medicine aisles, the clinic aims to provide convenient access to healthcare services for the Brownwood community.
Shannon Young DeLaCruz is the clinic provider at One Source. DeLaCruz said the clinic serves clients six months and older. “We were really busy this fall with the flu,” DeLaCruz said. “Coughs, cold, congestion, rash — that kind of thing.
“We don’t do primary care,” she explained, “but there’s a lot of things we can do here. Flu testing, strep, that kind of thing.”
DeLaCruz said the clinic, which accepts most insurance including Medicare and Medicaid, can help patients receive attention until they are able to see their primary care provider. She said the United pharmacy and staff have been incredible partners.
“The staff here at the store have been so good to us,” DeLaCruz said. “The pharmacy really tries to be quick so that by the time the patient’s released from the clinic, most of the time their prescriptions are ready.
“Of course, we do send their prescriptions wherever they want us to, but it is really convenient, and they can do their shopping and things while they’re here,” she said.
Though a clinic in a grocery store may seem like a strange atmosphere, DeLaCruz said her patients appreciate the open spaces of the store as compared to a doctor’s waiting room full of illness. “They’re feeling very comfortable about it,” she said. “And of course, they can get their prescription and then if they need anything from the store like Tylenol or whatever, it’s just very convenient.”
Brownwood Regional Medical Center CEO Chip Camp was also on hand for the ribbon-cutting. Camp explained that One Source locations are the center’s walk-in clinics, and that United is the first retail outlet to host a BRMC clinic inside it. He said the United clinic was designed with the community in mind. “Instead of having to travel to the medical community sites, this is where people are,” Camp said. “That’s why when United announced they were doing this, we approached them and worked with United to set this clinic up.”
Camp said United has clinics at some other locations, but that the Brownwood clinic represents a new direction for BRMC. “[DeLaCruz] is a great nurse practitioner,” Camp said. “She’s got a couple years of experience now, and doing the urgent care walk-in model, the convenience model, has been really good for us. And I think it’s good for the community as well.”
DeLaCruz hopes Brown County will try her location for its urgent care needs. “I just really want people in our community to know that this is where they can come for quick, efficient, caring people to assist them with their healthcare.”
United is located at 302 E. Commerce in Brownwood.
